Bowmar - First Electronic Calculator Made In USA

Bowmar was a small company specialising in high technology components for the space programmes and produced a hand-held calculator as a demonstration device for its Light Emitting Diode (LED) displays - “funny red numbers that are almost illegible”. So good was the reception to the Bowmar 901B calculator, fondly called the Bowmar Brain, that in September 1971 it moved into large scale calculator production. This model (the 901B) was also produced for other companies including Craig (model 4501) and Commodore (C110).

Curt Herzstark - Mini Curta

Curt Herzstark (1902~1988) The Curta looks like a small metal pepper-mill or coffee grinder. It is, in fact, a precision instrument which performs calculations mechanically using no electric or electronic parts. I can best describe the sensation of turning the crank on a Curta as being similar to winding a fine 35mm camera. To the best of my knowledge it is the smallest mechanical calculating machine ever built. The Curta was invented by Curt Herzstark of Austria.

Dalton Adding Machine - Patented 1899-1912 ~ Introduced 1902 James LewisDalton, president of the Addograph Company, formed the Adding Typewriter Company that same year. It was later called the Dalton Adding Machine Company. The Dalton was the first ten key adding machine. It went on to become one of the most popular 10 key adders of the time. Earlier models had glass inserts to allow customers to view the gears actually calculating the answers.
