HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced the HP 48gII graphing calculator, a powerful new entry into HP´s expanding calculator line.

The HP 48gII graphing calculator performs a vast array of calculations and 3D graphics at an affordable estimated U.S. retail price of $129.(1) With an onboard library of 180 scientific and engineering constants and units, it is built for engineers, surveying professionals and students who need portable calculating power with the convenience of connectivity.

"The HP 48gII lends itself to a wide variety of uses, all the way from the classroom to the work place," said Fred Valdez, general manager, Calculators, HP. "This model combines the ultimate computation features in a very affordable package."

The calculator connects to a PC through a standard serial cable,(2) which enables users to load commercial and public domain programs, download collected data, and back up programs stored in the calculator´s 80.7 kilobytes of user memory. Through its infrared port, the HP 48gII can quickly communicate with other 48gIIs and the recently announced HP 49g+ calculator.

In addition to the efficient RPN(3) (Reverse Polish Notation) entry mode, the HP 48gII offers optional algebraic and textbook entry modes, a user-friendly Computer Algebra System for dynamic equation solving, a fast flexible editor and 3D graphics. Quality-made in look and feel, the calculator has firm, durable keys and a sharp, easy-to-read 131 x 64 pixel screen.

Within the next several weeks, HP plans to launch two additional new calculators: one graphing and one scientific. The forthcoming graphing calculator, together with the HP 48gII, HP 49g+ and the entry-level HP 9g, are designed to fulfill the needs and budgets of a broad spectrum of users. The HP 17bII+ financial calculator was launched Sept. 23.

"By early 2004, HP will have a broad line of 11 scientific, graphing and financial calculators designed to meet the needs of all calculator users," said Valdez.
