This is super simple:

1) Take what ever your percentage is and divide by 100

2) add 1 to it (ALWAYS)

3) take the full amount ie: in this case $180 and divide it by the percantile, in other words:
1.4

180 1.4 = 128.57
Therfore
128.47 + 40% = 180

lets try a different example:

What is the cost price of something that is $1500 if the V.A.T is 14%

easy, remember: percentage divided by 100 (add 1)
1500 1.14 (can you see the 14 in there, next to that famous one) = 1315.79
in other words
$1315.79 + 14% = $1500

working out percantages is even easier:

For Instance, what is 40% of 600 = 240
how?
4x6 = 24

you figure out where I got that 4 and 6 from ;)

lets try it again

70% of 500 = 350
7x5 = 35

or you could, and should, use a calculator :)

:)

In reply to Richard:
You take the $180.00 dllars, multiply that value by the 40% makeup. Keep in mind that 50% is half or $90.00, so you know your makeup is less than $90.00. So, $180 times 40% equals $72.00. Thus your cost is $180.00 - $72.00 equals $108.00.

180 : 1.40
the price you will pay is 128.57
so the mark up is 51.43
